Matale District is located in the Central Province of Sri Lanka, with an area of ​​19,939 square kilometres, extending from 80.28 to 80.59 East longitude and 7.24 to 8.01 North latitude.

Matale District is bordered by Anuradhapura to the north, Polonnaruwa, Badulla and Ampara to the east, Kandy to the south and Kurunegala to the west.
